Ususally diet and exercise are the best ways to lose weight, but sometimes they are not enough. There are other options you can discuss with your weight loss doctor to add to your routine of eating healthy and exercising, such as using Xenical, which is also known as Alli or Orlistat.

All of us fight a daily battle, when it comes to losing weight, and keeping our bodies healthy. Depending upon your lifestyle, some people may be in fine shape, while others suffer from an obesity problem. Whether the obesity is being caused by lack of exercise and overindulging or some kind of medical or psychological condition, weight gain is something that is frowned upon in our society. People see overweight people as "lazy". This common stereotype does not give justice to individuals who are actually trying to do something about their weight. Many of us exercise, and if you exercise and eat right, you will typically find the result rewarding over a long period of time. The key is sticking to the routine. However, there are people out there who have tried to lose weight by supplementing their current diets with heart healthy options and exercising, but have failed to show results. In cases such as these, there could be a physical condition that is not allowing the body to lose weight or even a psychological condition that is causing distress in someone's life, making them resort to food to take their mind off their problems. Regardless of the problem, there are medications out there such as Xenical (also known as Alli or Orlistat), which aid us in our battle against weight gain.

Medications are usually not the primary option, when it comes to weight loss. If you are not exercising or eating healthy food, any doctor will tell you that the chances of you losing weight are slim to none unless you decide to change your lifestyle up a bit. However, sometimes medication is needed, especially when diet and exercise fail. The drug Xenical is the brand name for the generic version of the drug called Orlistat. Alli is also a brand name. All three are the same drug, just different names. Xenical helps people lose weight by stopping the digestion and absorption of fat in the things that we eat. Xenical blocks the function of a body enzyme called lipase. This particular enzyme is made inside the pancreas, and its role is to break down fat in food so the body has the capability to absorb it. Since Orlistat interrupts the way lipase works, fat is not able to be broken up or absorbed by the body. About one quarter of fat is blocked from being absorbed by the body, while the rest of the fat comes out of your body in stool form.

Most doctors will not place a patient on Xenical (Alli or Orlistat) unless he or she has a BMI (body mass index) of 30 or greater. If you are suffering from a physical medical condition that is contributing to your weight gain, doctors may also consider placing you on Xenical, since excessive weight gain can be dangerous to your health. Furthermore, just because you start taking Xenical does not mean you can eat whatever you want and not exercise. This is not a "magic pill" by any means. Xenical should be used in combination with a proper diet and exercise program in order to achieve the best results.

So how successful is Xenical, Alli, or Orlistat? The results vary. Orlistat does help you lose weight, but in studies, the weight loss is about the same as you would achieve by eating a healthy diet and exercising on a routine basis. Again, if dieting and exercise has failed, then medication may be introduced into the picture. Your doctor will tell you to continue to eat well and exercise while taking Xenical, and it is the Xenical that will hopefully give the person the peace of mind he or she needs in the weight loss category. Once you begin to lose weight with Xenical, you are more likely to continue to not only keep taking the drug, but to stick to a diet and exercise routine. Some studies have shown that people who stop taking the drug end up putting the weight back on. However, it is hard to determine, if the drug itself is responsible for this. If the individual also quits their diet or takes exercise out of the picture, then weight gain is more likely, even if you just eliminate one of the three weight loss remedies discussed (diet, exercise, and medication). If you have a medical or psychological illness, you must incorporate all three of these weight lose remedies into your life in order to get the best results. In addition, if you have a psychological disorder, such as anxiety, depression, or OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder), which is causing you to overeat; behavioral therapy may also have to be introduced into the equation in order to achieve success. Always follow your doctor's instructions. If you are having success with diet and exercise alone, then the drug Alli is not needed. As with any drug, always talk to your doctor about Xenical, Alli or Orlistat. Ask about possible side effects and whether or not you are a good candidate for the drug.
