When starting a weight loss program of any kind, it is important to understand what is associated with how we lose weight, such as different methods, what wellness means, and how to lose weight in a healthy and safe way. One important aspect of a healthy weight is our metabolism.

Metabolism is extremely important when it comes to maintaining a healthy weight. Many of us suffer from some kind of weight problem, especially obesity, which can cause numerous health risks down the line, if we are not careful about what we eat and how much we are eating. Metabolism is basically the amount of energy your body burns in order to function. This energy is known as calories, and believe it or not we are always burning off calories, even when we are sleeping. The simple movement of our stomach muscles up and down while we are breathing burns up calories overnight. However, weight gain takes place when the amount of calories we consume is more than what we are burning off in a physical or resting state. Augmenting our metabolism through exercise and proper diet is a great way to burn off those extra calories that are causing dismay in our lives.

The best way to increase your metabolism is to start exercising. Exercise is probably one of the most important things we can do for ourselves in order to maintain a healthy body. Many people try different kinds of diet plans. Some work, but many of us fail at these programs because the type of food we are restricted to eating becomes a mundane routine day after day. We want to splurge on our favorite "junk" foods every now and then, and although some diet plans do allow a taste of the good life, many of us feel it is just not enough. With that said, if we exercise four or five days a week, our bodies will get to the point where it regularly burns more calories when we are in our resting state. You don't have to cut out those hamburgers or fries and other delicious foods. The goal is to just watch your portion size and to exercise on a regular basis.

Some of us are not able to exercise four or five days a week because our schedules simply don't allow the extra time. However, any form of exercise is a good thing. You can exercise 15-30 minutes a day, or walk a few miles one day, then take off the next day, and then walk more every other day. What type of exercise program you decide and how much you perform is simply up to you. If you are not able to exercise due to a medical condition, or can only workout on a limited basis each week, just be sure that you are eating low calorie foods high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat. These are the good fats, the type of fats that reduce bad cholesterol levels. It is the saturated fat foods we want to avoid. Foods high in saturated fat can not only cause weight gain, but are extremely unhealthy for you, especially if they are consumed on a daily basis and in large amounts. This is not to say that you can never eat a meal that has more saturated fat in it; you just have to be selective on how often you eat these types of foods and make sure you are exercising on a regular basis. Foods high in polyunsaturated fats are great for cardiovascular health. Omega-3 fatty acids (found in fish) are extremely healthy. You can purchase fish oil and get this good fat rolling through your body. Monounsaturated fats (found in foods like nuts and avocados) have been proven to lower bad cholesterol (known as LDL or low-density lipoprotein cholesterol) and promote an increase in HDL cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein), which is good cholesterol. HDL cholesterol is the type that takes saturated fat away from the heart. Foods containing "good" fats in combination with an exercise routine is the best way to raise your metabolism levels over time.

So how do you know if your metabolism is too slow? Well, people with a low metabolism often feel tired, cold, and have dry skin. Individuals with a slow metabolism also tend to have a slow pulse. Always talk to your physician about your metabolism that way he or she can rule out any medical issues that may be causing a low metabolism rate. The best way to increase your metabolism is through exercise as mentioned before. If you enjoy lifting weights that is perfectly fine, but always be sure to do some kind of cardiovascular exercise, such as jogging or walking, in addition to just lifting. The combination of these two types of exercises will usually yield the best results, along with a heart healthy diet.
