One of the biggest problems in modern day America is obesity. People who carry excess weight are putting their health at risk. It is a known fact that overweight individuals have higher rates of heart attacks, strokes, and numerous other health problems, including cancer. When you think about it, your health is really the most important thing in your life. It comes before anything, even your job. If you are not healthy, you cannot perform the necessary daily tasks that you need to do in order to function and live a productive life. Exercise, fitness, and health all go hand in hand with each other and are the major ways to fighting the problem of obesity. Overweight people are usually in denial about their problem. No-one likes to be told by anyone that they have a weight problem. It is very common when a friend, family member, or even a doctor point out a weight problem with an individual; they tend to deny the problem and may get angry at the person bringing up the problem. Denial is a huge problem, when it comes to obesity, and although people deep down really know that they are overweight, they tend to push the problem aside as if it does not exist and continue eating the wrong foods and avoid a proper exercise and fitness program to keep in shape. However, the problem of obesity is becoming a well known issue now in America, especially in schools where healthy lunch foods are now being served and gym coaches have stepped up their exercise routines with students, and many school districts have done away with snack and soda machines. We hear constant stories on the news about staying healthy, and there are numerous shows that give us tips on how to keep the weight off by staying in shape with a good exercise program. Whether or not we choose to listen or to filter such information is really completely up to us and can make all the difference between putting on weight and keeping a healthy weight level. Exercise is probably the best way of keeping your weight in line with your height. The problem with some people is that they will make up excuses about why they are not able to exercise. You have probably heard some of these common excuses from people you know: "I don't have the time to exercise, I am too busy", "I get all the exercise I need at work", "I cannot exercise, because I have a medical condition". Although the last phrase may hold a grain of truth to it, there is always some form of exercise you can discuss with your doctor even if you have a medical problem, where certain types of exercise may exacerbate the existing problem. Where there is a will, there is a way as the old saying goes, and in order for fitness to be a success, one must exercise to a certain extent. How much exercise do I need you may ask? Well, optimally, if you can walk about a mile a day and maintain a healthy diet, this usually produces positive results. However, even exercising at least 3 days per week augments your health and fitness levels and reduces the chances of a heart attack or some other medical problem due to obesity. What kind of exercise to do is really up to you, unless you have been diagnosed with a medical condition where only certain types of exercising is safe for your health. Weightlifting is a great form of exercise that will get your fitness level way up and give you the body you desire. Lifting weights is tough and requires work, but any form of exercise requires work. One important thing to remember about weightlifting: don't just lift weights. Perform some kind of physical activity to get your heart rate up, such as walking or jogging in addition to the body shaping weights. You may want to talk to your doctor before you start a weightlifting program. Weightlifting can be dangerous for some people. It can augment an existing medical condition, such as a heart condition or a back problem, and should be avoided in some cases. The best type of exercise is walking. It is really the safest form of exercise. Jogging is good as well, but it is not as safe as a steady walk. Jogging can cause knee problems over time for some people, especially if you are jogging on an uneven surface or wearing the wrong type of shoes for such exercise. Buy yourself some good jogging shoes and make sure if you decide you want to jog instead of walk, that you do it on a flat, even surface that has some softness to it. Many high school and college tracks are good places to perform jogging and walking, but if you want to jog or walk around your neighborhood in order to stay fit, that is fine as long as you know that sidewalks sometimes have bumps and cracks in them, and the last thing you want is to fall down and suffer an unnecessary injury. Remember, your health is the most important thing in your life, and exercise leads to good fitness, which leads to a healthier body from a physical standpoint and a healthier mind from a psychological point of view.
